Given Mount Kilimanjaro’s proximity to the equator, it doesn’t experience distinct winter and summer seasons but rather distinct dry and wet periods. Therefore, the optimal time for Kilimanjaro climbs usually coincides with the warmest and driest months (refer to Kilimanjaro weather). Safety is paramount, as adverse weather conditions significantly raise climbing risks. Rain, mud, snow, ice, and cold can exert considerable strain on climbers. Conversely, favorable weather conditions notably enhance summit success rates. Naturally, these periods also witness increased foot traffic on the mountain. The table below outlines the relative temperatures, precipitation levels, cloud cover, and crowd levels across the calendar months.
For optimal weather conditions with reduced rainfall and slightly warmer temperatures, consider climbing Kilimanjaro during January, February, and the first half of March. April and May typically experience heavier rains, while November and December have a shorter rainy season, which shouldn’t significantly disrupt the trek. June to August offers clear skies but colder temperatures, making it an excellent time for witnessing the wildebeest migration as well.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is feasible year-round, but it’s advisable to choose periods with lower chances of precipitation for a smoother ascent. The dry seasons extend from early December to early March and from late June to late October, presenting optimal weather conditions for climbing and consequently marking the busiest months (high season).
Our group climbs are strategically scheduled during these dry seasons.
Note that the rains are unpredictable and may come early or extend beyond their typical time frames. It is possible to experience mostly dry weather conditions during the rainy season, just as it is possible to have heavy rain during the dry season.
We recommend climbing Kilimanjaro in the months of January to February. These months are the driest in Kilimanjaro, offering you the best views and many perfect-pictures opportunities. Furthermore, December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October are also the best times to visit the mountain.
